NEUROSPIN is looking for a post-doctoral researcher on the Neural Correlates of Consciousness
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position to join a large-scale collaborative project (“Accelerating Research on Consciousness”) focused on testing two major theories of consciousness: global neuronal workspace theory (GNWT) and integrated information theory (IIT). Funded by a Templeton World Charity Foundation initiative (https://www.templetonworldcharity.org/arc), the project involves several exciting components including adversarial collaboration (team members include Stanislas Dehaene & Giulio Tononi), open science practices (pre-registration, data sharing, internal replications, etc.), and acquisition of large, rich datasets from three different techniques (M-EEG, fMRI, ECoG).
Profile: We are looking for a post-doc with strong background in cognitive neuroscience methods and interests in open science, big data, and big questions, i.e. the neural underpinnings of consciousness.
Eligible qualifications for this position include:
• Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, Cognitive neuroscience, or related discipline
• Thorough knowledge of the technical, theoretical and practical principles of M/EEG, fMRI and EcoG and expertise in signal processing.
• Fluent knowledge in computer programming (languages: Python, Matlab, shell scripting, C++)
• Knowledge of cognitive neuroscience
Knowledge of the French language is not required, but would be a bonus.
The position is funded for two years, with a start date around September 1, 2021. The postdoc will be based in the laboratory of Prof. Stanislas Dehaene at NeuroSpin. She/he will work on the pre-registered experiments and planned analyses, in coordination with an international team of scientists, to ensure data quality and overview the analyses, with a particular focus on the application of multivariate decoding techniques to MEG and intracranial signals, and to the fusion of multi-modal data (fMRI, MEG, intracranial). There will be many opportunities to explore independent questions using these same datasets and contribute to side projects that can lead to autonomous publications.

NeuroSpin is France’s advanced brain-imaging center – a building entirely dedicated to the understanding of the human brain and the development of neuroscience technologies. Five laboratories currently share their expertise on site and provide a stimulating research environment. NeuroSpin hosts 8 state-of-the-art neuroimaging systems including three human MRIs (3T, 7T, and soon a world-record 11.7 Tesla), three animal MRIs (7T, 11.7T and 17.T), an MEG system, and a 3-photon imaging system. The MEG is a 306-channel system (Neuromag/Elekta) typically paired with EEG (native + EGI) and eye-tracking (Eyelink 1000 SR Research).
NeuroSpin teams develop advanced post-processing tools for structural image processing (BrainVisa), fMRI data analysis (Nipy, Nilearn), diffusion imaging (Connectomist), and M/EEG analysis (MNE Python). A 150-terabyte data archiving system, a large local computer cluster and access to the new CEA supercomputer are available. Neurospin’s environment also benefits from the new NeuroPSI building, dedicated to fundamental neuroscience and opening in 2021.
